House front in 1993
|
We bought 20 Henrietta Street in Whitby from the Fortune family in 1993.
Before we bought it, the house was two properties. The ground floor was accessed via the front door and consisted of two rooms - one to the left and one to the right of the front door. This was used as the office for the Fortune Kipper business. The first floor was accessed from a door in the alleyway between the house and the smoke house. On entering this side door, you had no ground floor access; just a staircase leading straight upstairs. This took you to the first floor then there was (and is) a kitewinder staircase leading up to the top floor.
Bill Fortune was running the kipper business at the time and they were selling the whole house because his aunt. who had been living upstairs, had sadly passed away so the upstairs was no longer needed as a dwelling.
We just love the house so much, it's full of Whitby history so we've filled it with pictures kindly given to us by the Fortune family. We are proud to have the privilege of acting as custodians of this Fortune heritage which is an important part of Whitby history.
